How GoodDayTo judges hiking weather

A good hiking day needs more than blue sky. Long exposure to wind, gusts, heat, cold, rain and strong UV can turn an otherwise attractive forecast into an uncomfortable or impractical outing. GoodDayTo compares the next hours and looks for a usable multi-hour window instead of rating the whole day from one snapshot.

Why hiking needs a conservative weather score

Hikers stay exposed for longer than someone taking a short walk. Conditions that are merely annoying for twenty minutes can become important over several hours. GoodDayTo therefore penalises rising rain probability, uncomfortable apparent temperature, stronger sustained wind, gusts and high UV. A WAIT result often means the weather improves later and moving the start time could produce a much more pleasant outing.

The nearby-place panel can look for mapped hiking routes, paths or parks around your location. That adds useful local context, but it is not proof that a specific route is open, safe or suitable for you.

What the hiking score cannot know

GoodDayTo does not know the altitude, exposure, steepness, river crossings, surface condition or difficulty of the trail you plan to use. It cannot see local closures, avalanche risk, wildfire restrictions, landslides, washed-out bridges or whether your equipment and experience match the route. Mountain weather can also differ substantially from a nearby town forecast.

What the score means

GO means the forecast signals GoodDayTo can measure look favourable for hiking. WAIT means conditions are mixed and a better window may be nearby. NOT TODAY means the weather contains enough unfavourable signals that postponing or choosing a different activity is likely to be the better weather decision.

What weather does the hiking score prefer?

Mild apparent temperature, low rain risk, manageable wind and gusts, and reasonable UV are generally favourable. The tool also favours daylight for normal hiking.

Why can wind matter so much on a hike?

Wind can become much stronger on ridges, exposed ground and higher terrain than it feels in town. GoodDayTo uses forecast wind and gusts as warning signals, but it cannot model every trail or elevation.

Does GoodDayTo check for hiking routes or parks nearby?

Yes. The nearby-place check can look for mapped trails, paths or parks around your location. It does not confirm that a route is open, maintained, legal to access or suitable for your ability.

Does the score know the trail condition after recent rain?

No. Mud, flooding, snow cover, fallen trees and damaged paths may remain after the weather improves. The score evaluates the forecast, not the physical condition of a trail.
