How GoodDayTo judges mountain biking weather

Mountain biking needs a different weather decision from road cycling. Rain does not only make the rider wet; on some trails it can reduce grip, create mud, damage sensitive surfaces or trigger local closure rules. GoodDayTo therefore gives rain a strong penalty and clearly separates forecast weather from actual trail condition.

Temperature and wind still matter because climbs can create heat stress while exposed ridges can feel rough in stronger wind. Useful daylight is favoured as well, because this tool does not assume that a trail is lit or suitable after dark.

The result is intentionally conservative. A dry forecast after a wet night does not prove that a clay or poorly drained trail has recovered. GoodDayTo can help choose the better weather window, but the local trail report gets the final vote.

๐Ÿšต Weather is not the same as trail condition

  • A blue-sky forecast does not prove the trail has dried after earlier rain.
  • Use local trail-status or land-manager updates before riding sensitive routes.
  • The nearby check can find mapped MTB context, but mapping may be incomplete and does not confirm legal access.

Why this activity needs its own weather score

GoodDayTo does not use one generic outdoor score for every plan. The same wind, rain, temperature or UV level can matter very differently depending on what you are doing. This page uses a dedicated model and searches complete practical time blocks so a single pleasant hour does not automatically become a recommendation for a much longer activity.

A WAIT result is useful when conditions are mixed or the stronger weather window is later. GO means the measurable forecast factors look favourable. NOT TODAY means the current forecast is a poor fit or a serious weather signal has capped the score.

What this score deliberately does not know

GoodDayTo cannot measure mud, soil moisture on your exact trail, drainage, erosion risk, fallen trees, technical difficulty, trail maintenance or closures. It also cannot know whether a land manager asks riders to stay off wet trails. Treat GO as a forecast screen, then check the actual route.

That honesty is important: weather data can improve a decision without replacing local information. Always combine the GoodDayTo result with access rules, official warnings, venue or route information, surface conditions and the judgement appropriate to the activity.

How to use the result

Start with your location and let GoodDayTo compare the upcoming hourly forecast. The result highlights the best complete window, explains the main positive and negative weather factors, and shows whether another part of the day is meaningfully better. If the activity has useful mapped-place context, the nearby section may also show a relevant option without claiming that it is open, available or safe.

For plans lasting several hours, use the time selector on the activity result or the Activity Planner to compare complete blocks. That is more useful than looking at one forecast icon because conditions can change substantially from the start of an outing to the end.

Frequently asked questions

Why is rain weighted heavily for mountain biking?

Rain can affect rider comfort and trail surfaces, so the model penalises both rain probability and measured precipitation more strongly than a normal walking score.

Does a dry forecast mean the trail is dry?

No. Ground conditions can lag the forecast by many hours or days depending on soil and drainage.

Can GoodDayTo find MTB trails nearby?

It can search mapped MTB or cycling-route context around the chosen location, but it does not confirm access or closure status.

Does the score include trail difficulty?

No. Technical grade, elevation, obstacles and rider ability are outside the weather model.

What should I check after a GO result?

Check local trail status, access rules, recent rain, route difficulty and any official warnings before you ride.
